Procedure
A 2 L round bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer was charged with N-acetyl-3-(4-thiazolyl)-L-alanine from Example 1L (92.6 g, 0.43 mol) and 6M hydrochloric acid (1 L). The resultant solution was heated to reflux. After 3 hours the mixture was allowed to cool to ambient temperature. The solution was then concentrated under reduced pressure, evaporated from toluene (3×200 mL), and dried under vacuum overnight to give 120 g of a slightly wet solid. This material was used in the next reaction without further purification.
