Procedure

A solution of 500 mg (1.9 mmol) of 2,4,4-trimethyl-6-bromo-(4H)-1-benzothiopyran (Compound 50) in 5 ml of ethyl acetate was treated with 500 mg of 10% palladium sulfide on carbon and then shaken under an atmosphere (30 psi) of hydrogen in a Parr apparatus for 24 hours. The mixture was filtered through celite and the solvent was removed in-vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (silica; hexanes) to give the title compound as a colorless oil. PMR (CDCl3): & 1.21 (3 H, s), 1.33 (3 H, d, J=6.6 Hz), 1.36 (3 H, s), 1.64-1.89 (2 H, M), 3.37-3.50 (1 H, m), 7.10 (1 H, dd, J=8.4 Hz, 2.1 Hz), 7.19 (1 H, d, 8.4 Hz), 7.20 (1 H, d, 2.1 Hz)
