Procedure
A solution of 1.00 g (3.88 mmol) of 3-chloro-8,9,10,11-tetrahydro-7H-pyrido[3',4':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-c]quinoline, 0.47 g (3.88 mmol) of p-fluorobenzonitrile, 0.54 g (3.88 mmol) of K2CO3 and 8 ml of dimethylsulfoxide are stirred at 80° C. for 3 days. The reaction mixture is allowed to cool and is diluted with water producing a brown precipitate which is collected by filtration and dried. The crude product is purified by flash column chromatography (5% methanol in chloroform) to yield 0.06 g (4%) of the title compound as a pink solid: m.p.>275° C.; m/e 358.
