Procedure

An aliquot of the methyl ester from Step (n) (200 mg) was hydrolyzed by stirring it in a mixture of 5 ml of 10° sodium hydroxide and 5 ml ethanol for 4 hr at 25° C. and 1 hr at 100° C. The azeotrope was distilled off, water (10 ml) was added and the resulting solution slowly acidified to pH 2.5 with 2N HCl. The resulting precipitated acid was isolated (60 mg).
