In 30 ml of phosphorous oxychloride was suspended 10.2 g of 2-(2-cyclohexylethyl)-7-hydroxy-6-nitro-5H-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one, and 4 ml of tripropylamine was added dropwise to the suspension at room temperature while stirring. The stirring was continued at 80° to 85° C. for an additional 3 hours. After cooling, the reaction mixture was poured into ice-water, and the precipitate formed was collected by filtration and washed with water to obtain 10.4 g of 7-chloro-2-(2-cyclohexylethyl)-6-nitro-5H-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one as a crystalline powder.
