Procedure
To a suspension of 1,5-dimethyltetrazole (3.8 g, 39.0 mmoles) in tetrahydrofuran (40 mL) at -40° C. was added butyl lithium (17.7 mL of a 2.2M solution, 39.0 mmoles). After stirring for 10 minutes, 4,4'-difluoro-2,2'-dimethylbenzophenone (8 g, 32.5 mmoles) was added and the solution stirred for 3 hours. The reaction was quenched with 1N hydrochloric acid. The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give 7.5 g of the title compound; m.p.=186°-188° C.
