Procedure
To a mixture of 4-chloro-3-nitropyridine (8 g) and NaHCO3 (4.2 g) in ethanol (200 cm3) at room temperature was added over 3 minutes 4-aminobutanol (4.5 g). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 11/4 hours and the solvent was then removed under vacuum. The residue was suspended in saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution (50 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×250 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated. The residue was then recrystallised from ethyl acetate to afford the title compound, (6.5 g, 62%), as yellow crystals, m.p. 80-82°.
