Procedure
3.0 Parts of dimethyl-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methyl-butane phosphonate from Example 23a and 30 parts of 48% hydrobromic acid were heated on a steam--bath for 1 hour and the volatiles then removed at 80° C. under reduced pressure. Crystallisation of the residual solid from water gave 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methyl-butane phosphonic acid m.p. 192°-5° C. with the following percentage composition by weight.
