Procedure
To a 10 mL flask was added 3-benzyl-5-(3-methyl-3H-benzoxazol-2-ylidene)-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one (100 mg, 0.28 mmol), anhydrous CHCl3 (2 mL) and methyl p-toluenesulfonate (53 μL, 0.35 mmol). After heating at reflux 10 min, the reaction mixture was heated at 120° C. for 2 h to yield a red oil. The desired intermediate, 3-benzyl-5-(3-methyl-3H-benzoxazol-2-ylidene)-2-methylthio-4-oxo-2-thiazolium p-toluenesulfonate, was not isolated successfully in previous experiments similar to Example 1 and, thus, the crude reaction mixture was diluted with anhydrous CHCl3 (4 mL) and used without purification in the next step.
