Procedure
2-Methyl-4-hydroxy-6-ethylthienopyrimidine (0.71 g) was dissolved in phosphorus oxychloride (10 mL) and heated to reflux for 19 hours. After concentrating to dryness, the residue was diluted with water (20 mL) and the product was extracted with methylene chloride (3×5 mL). The combined extracts were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified on silica gel (50% ethyl acetate/hexane) giving 2-methyl-4-chloro-6-ethylthienopyrimidine (0.58 g). Yield=74%, Rf=0.73 (25% ethyl acetate/hexane).
