Procedure

A mixture of 2-(2-cyano-acetylamino)-4-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-chloro-thiophene-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.00 g, 2.54 mmol), Fe (432 mg, 7.71 mmol), and NH4Cl (110 mg, 2.03 mmol) in EtOH (20 mL) and H2O (10 mL) was heated to 85 C for 2 h. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and filtered through a plug of celite, eluting with hot MeOH. The eluent was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a solid that was used in the next step without further purification. MS (ESI) m/e 362 (M−H)−.
