3-(3,4,5,6-Tetramethoxy-2-methylbenzyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1.16 g, 3.35 mol) was dissolved in acetone (5.0 ml) and, after addition of anhydrous sodium carbonate (1.02 g, 7.38 mmol) and benzyl bromide (0.69 g, 4.02 mmol), the mixture was heated to reflux for 3 hours. The reaction solution was filtered and the residue obtained by concentration of the filtrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=2:1) to give the title compound (1.45 g, 3.32 mmol, 99%).
