Procedure
The starting material was obtained by dissolving 1.85 g. of 1-ethyl-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydronicotinic acid methyl ester (prepared as described in Example 1) in 10 ml. of dioxane and 10 ml. of methanol and heating the solution under reflux for 3 hours in the presence of 20 ml. of 1-N sodium hydroxide. The mixture was cooled down, acidified with 0.5-N hydrochloric acid, the separated crystals were filtered off under suction and recrystallized from methanol/ether. Yield 1.3 g.; melting point 142°-144° C.
