Procedure
A solution of sodium methoxide in methanol [prepared by dissolving sodium (0.13 g) in methanol (10 ml)] was added to a solution of 4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-(2-oxo-azetidin-1-yl)pyrazole (1.88 g; prepared as described in Example 33) in methanol (15 ml) under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was stirred at laboratory temperature for 30 minutes then acidified with 2N hydrochloric acid (5 ml) and evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in dichloromethane (50 ml) and was washed with water (2×25 ml), dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and evaporated to give 4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-(2-methoxycarbonylethyl)aminopyrazole (1.93 g), m.p. 171°-173° C., in the form of a colourless solid.
