PROCEDURE

A solution of 2.5 g of 3-fluoro-5-trifluoromethylphenylacetonitrile and 2.34 g (12.3 mmol) of p-toluenesulfonic acid in 75 ml of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether is hydrogenated for 3 hours at room temperature at 40 psi, using 200 mg 10% palladium on carbon catalyst. The catalyst is filtered of and the solvent evaporated to half the volume. Upon standing, the p-toluenesulfonic acid salt of the desired 3-fluoro-5-trifluoromethylphenethylamine crystallizes. The white crystals, 4.26 g (91%) are collected by filtration.
