To a solution of methyl 2-[4-(methoxycarbonyl)(1,3-oxazolidin-3-yl)]-2-oxoacetate (2) (0.84 g, 3.87 mM) in THF (50 ml) cooled to −78° C. was added 1,1-dimethylpropylmagnesium chloride (1M in THF, 8 ml, 8 mM). After 3 hrs. at −78° C. the mixture was quenched with saturated NH4Cl (50 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The organic layer separated, washed with brine (100 ml), dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The resulting pale yellow oil was flash chromatographed eluting with 20% EtOAc/hexane. A clear oil (3) (0.61 g, 61%) was obtained.
