4-(3,4-Difluorophenyl)-2-methoxy-1,6-dimethyl-1,4-dihydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester was converted to (+)-4-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-1,6-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-pyrinidine-5-carboxylic acid following steps C and D above in Example 14 to give the product as a crystalline solid from diethyl ether ([αD]=+48°, c=0.145 MeOH).
