1,4-Dihydro-4-oxo-5-(phenylmethoxy)-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid, 2-[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]hydrazide (69 g, 0.191 mol) was added at 0° C. to 370 ml of trifluoroacetic acid. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, then evaporated. The remaining syrup was treated with ether to yield 68.2 g of crude 1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-5-(phenylmethoxy)-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid, hydrazide, trifluoroacetate (1:2) salt as a solid.
