Reaction Steps
10 g (39.5 mmol) of E-4-[2-(3-pyridyl)ethenyl]benzaldehyde ethylene acetal (1a) were dissolved in 100 ml of ethanol, 1.6 g of palladium on charcoal (10%) were added, and hydrogenation was carried out at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure. Filtration and removal of the solvent in vacuo produced 8.6 g (33.7 mmol, 85%) of a white solid.
