Procedure

30 g (0.17 mole) of (3,3-dimethyl-tetrahydrofuran-2-ylidene)-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-methane and 100 g of concentrated hydrochloric acid are stirred in 300 ml of methanol at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated in vacuo, the residue is taken up in water, the pH value is adjusted to 7 to 8 with dilute sodium hydroxide solution and the mixture is extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase is washed with water, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated in vacuo. 30.7 g (93% of theory) of 3,3-dimethyl-2-hydroxy-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl-methyl)-tetrahydrofuran of melting point 93°-95° C. are obtained. ##STR101##
