To a cooled (0° C.) solution of (R)-methyl 3-(2-chloro-N-methylphenylsulfonamido)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-carboxylate (C-16) (840 mg, 2.216 mmol, 1.0 eq.) in MeOH:THF (1:1, 20 ml) was added dropwise a solution of LiOH.H2O (185 mg, 4.433 mmol, 2.0 eq.) in water (10 ml) and the reaction mixture was stirred at RT for 3 h. After completion of the reaction (monitored by TLC), the reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness and diluted with water (20 ml) and washed with ethyl acetate (20 ml). The aqueous layer was acidified to pH≈3 using 1N HCl and then extracted with methylene chloride (2×50 ml). The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated to afford the desired product as an off-white solid. Yield: 58% (470 mg, 1.2876 mmol).
