To a solution of 4H,6H-2,5,10b-Triaza-benzo[e]azulene-3,5-dicarboxylic acid 5-tert-butyl ester 3-ethyl ester (300 mg, 1.14 mmol) in DCM (30 mL), was added trifluoroacetic acid (3.42 mL, 3 ml/mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h. After the completion of the reaction as confirmed by TLC, excess of trifluoroacetic acid and DCM were removed in vacuo to afford 5,6-dihydro-4H-2,5,10b-triaza-benzo[e]azulene-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester trifluoroacetate (295 mg, 93%) as a gummy solid which was used without any further purification for the next step.
