To a solution of methyl 3-(5-methyl-2-pyridinyl)-5-vinylbenzoate (1.51 g, 5.97 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) was added sodium hydroxide (1 N, 17.9 mL, 17.9 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 18 h. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature, and hydrogen chloride (6N, 2.98 mL, 17.9, mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred for 30 min and was concentrated to dryness to give the tri-sodium chloride adduct of the title compound (2.5 g). MS 240.1 (M+1).
