To a solution of N-{[6-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl]methoxy}-1-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-1-phenylmethanimine (3.3 g, 9 mmol, 1 eq.) in 75 ml of DMSO and 15 ml of water was added p-TSA (1.79 g, 9.45 mmol, 1.05 eq.). The reaction was heated to 100° C. for 1.5 hrs. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with 400 ml of EtOAc, washed with sat. aqueous NaHCO3, followed by water (×2). The organic layer was separated, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give 6-[({[(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)(phenyl)methylene]amino}oxy)methyl]pyridine-2-carbaldehyde (3.1 g, 96% yield) as a viscous yellow oil.
