10.0 g Bis(1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-yl) sebacate (Prostab 5415, commercial product of Ciba Specialty Chemicals Inc.) are dissolved in 40 ml toluene/tert-butanol (2:1) and 8 g 50% aqueous hydrogen peroxide are added, followed by 18 ml nonanal, 0.1 ml acetic acid and 0.15 g CuCl2. The reaction mixture is stirred for 2 h at 25-25° C. and afterwards for 10 h at 40° C. The mixture is poured into 100 ml 0.1 N NaOH and subsequently extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase is washed twice with water and then with sat. sodium chloride solution and dried over sodium sulfate. The organic phase is removed in vacuo and the residue subjected to column chromatography on silica gel to afford 5.4 g of product.
