Procedure
A mixture of 4-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-1,2-dinitrobenzene (569 mg, 1.57 mmol), potassium carbonate (303 mg, 2.36 mmol), diethyl sulfhydrylmethylphosphonate (405 mg, 2.20 mmol) and 2-butanone (5 ml) is heated under reflux for 5 hours. The reaction mixture is then filtered, and the filtrate is concentrated to dryness and purified by prep. TLC to give diethyl 2-nitro-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenylthiomethylphosphonate. NMR (CDCl3) δ5.87 (m, 4H, OCH2CH3), 6.90 (d, 2H, 14 Hz, SCH2 -P) and 8.63 ppm (t, 6H, OCH2CH3).
