Aqueous 1M sodium hydroxide (16.3 mL; 16.3 mmole) was added to a stirring solution of (12(a)) (1.17 g; 3.3 mmole) in ethanol (70 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 19 hours, reduced to a small volume, diluted with water and adjusted to pH 2 by addition of 2M hydrochloric acid. The filtered solid was washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 5-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl-carbamoyl)-thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (12(b)) as a white solid (83%).
