Procedure
A mixture of intermediate (10) (0.25 mol) and potassium hydroxide (1 mol) in water (650 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled, acidified with HCl and the resulting precipitate was filtered off, washed with water, and dried, yielding 48 g of 8-chloro-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,5-benzodioxepin-6-carboxylic acid (intermediate 11).
