Procedure

To a solution of 4-hydroxyethoxybenzaldehyde (Bernstein et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 73: 906-912 (1951); 8.5 g, 51.2 mmol), 2,2-dimethoxypropane (30 mL, 244 mmol) in a mixture of methanol (40 mL) and CH2Cl2 (100 mL) was added anhydrous Amberlyst 15 (Aldrich) (1.0 g). The mixture was stirred for 5 hrs, the catalyst was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated to give the crude product contaminated with the starting aldehyde. This material was chromatographed on silica eluting with 1:1 ethyl acetate-hexane. The pure product fractions were pooled and concentrated. Drying under vacuum afforded 7.6 g (70%) of the title compound as a pale yellow, viscous liquid. 1H NMR: d 7.28 (d, J=9 Hz, 2H), 6.92 (d, J=9 Hz, 2H), 5.31 (s, 1H), 4.86 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 1H), 3.98 (t, J=5 Hz, 2H), 3.71 (q, J=5 Hz, 2H), 3.20 (s, 3H). 13C NMR: d 158.60, 130.19, 127.74, 113.90, 102.46, 69.43, 59.52, 52.27.
