To a solution of 0.090 g (0.2 mmol) of ethyl (E)-4-[2-(5,6-dihydro-5,5-dimethyl-8-(phenylthio)-naphthalenyl)ethenyl]benzoate (Compound A16) in 2.0 mL of methylene chloride was added dropwise a solution of 140 mg (0.45 mmol, 50-60%) of m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in 2.0 mL of methylene chloride and the reaction stirred at room temperature for 3.5 h. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride (2×). The organic phase was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography (silica, 30% ethyl acetate in hexanes) followed by recrystallization in EtOH to afford the title compound as a solid.
