Procedure

Triethylamine (6.24 ml, 44.8 mmol) was added to a solution of 4-methoxy-3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline (4.29 g, 22.4 mmol) in dichloromethane (45.0 ml), and the resulting mixture was ice-cooled, followed by adding dropwise thereto pivaloyl chloride (2.84 g, 23.5 mmol) at 0 to 5° C. The resulting mixture was warmed up to room temperature and stirred for 1 hour while maintaining the temperature. The mixture was partitioned by the use of a 5%-aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution and ethyl acetate, and the organic layer was washed with a 5% aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain N-[4-methoxy-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-2,2-dimethylpropanamide (6.16 g, 100%).
