Procedure

A mixture of the amide intermediate and 30 mL of 2.5 N NaOH is warmed to 70–80° C. for three hours. The clear aqueous solution is cooled and acidified to pH 5 with concentrated HCl. The white precipitate that forms is collected by filtration and washed with H2O to afford the desired 1,3-diallyl-8-(3-amino-1-methylpyrazol-5-yl)xanthine, which is recrystallized from CH3OH. A solution of 4-(benzyloxy)phenylacetic acid (0.196 mmol) in 3 mL of thionyl chloride is stirred at 70° C. for four hours, then excess thionyl chloride removed in a nitrogen stream.
