To a solution of the product (333 mg) of the above (1) in dimethylformamide (8 ml) is added a 50% suspension (58 mg) of sodium hydride in mineral oil. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour and further at 40°-50° C. for 30 minutes. After addition of a solution of p-chlorobenzoyl chloride (210 mg) in dimethylformamide (2 ml) under ice-cooling, the mixture is further stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. A 10% aqueous solution of ammonium chloride (10 ml) is added thereto under ice-cooling. The mixture is extracted with chloroform. The extract is washed with an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and water, dried and evaporated to give 4-(N-t-butoxycarbonyl-N-methylaminomethyl)-9-(p-chlorobenzoyl)-2,3,4,9-tetrahydrothiopyrano[2,3-b]indole as an oil (533 mg).
