Procedure
To a suspension of 4,4-diphenylpiperidine hydrochloride (0.195 g, 0.712 mmol) in EtOH (1.5 mL) was added Et3N (0.25 mL, 1.8 mmol, 2.6 eq) followed by acrylonitrile (0.13 mL, 2.01 mmol, 2.8 eq). The resulting solution was stirred at room temperature under argon for 15 min and then concentrated. Water was added, and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3×10 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give 170 mg (87%) of a tan solid, which was characterized spectroscopically and used in the next reaction without purification.
