A stirred solution of methyl 4[6-(4-chlorobutanoylamino)-2-methylpyridin-3-yl]benzoate (D8, 0.60 g, 1.7 mmole) in DMF (7 ml) at 25° C. under argon was treated portionwise over 15 minutes with potassium t-butoxide (0.23 g, 2.0 mmole). The mixture was stirred for 3 h, then poured into water (100 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as an orange solid (0.45 g, 85%).
