Procedure

To a 0° C. mixture of 9.66 g (59.6 mmol) of 6-methoxy-1-indanone and 4.29 g (59.6 mmol) of butyr-aldehyde in 10 ml ethanol is added 9.66 ml of a 4% KOH in ethanol solution. The reaction is stirred 1 hour and then added to 300 ml water and the pH of the quench adjusted to 2 with 1N hydrochloric acid. The resultant mixture is extracted with 3×300 ml ether, and the extracts combined, dried over MgSO4, evaporated and the residue triturated with ether to yield present title compound.
