A solution of diethyl benzylphosphonate (25 g) in methanol (10 ml) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (500 ml) solution was refluxed for 4 days. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, and precipitated crystal was collected by filtration to give benzylphosphonic acid (11.17 g) as colorless crystals.
