840 mg of ethyl 7-methoxyimidazo-[1,2-a]-quinoline-2-carboxylate were suspended in a mixture of 100 ml of water and 150 ml of ethanol and 3.5 ml of N sodium hydroxide solution were added. The mixture was heated on a steam bath for 30 minutes and the resulting solution was decolorized with charcoal, filtered and acidified with 3.7 ml of N hydrochloric acid. The mixture was cooled in ice to obtain colorless crystals of 7-methoxyimidazo-[1,2-a]-quinoline-2-carboxylic acid melting at 265°-266° C.
