To a solution of 25.9 g. (0.07 mol.) of N-carbobenzoxy-DL-proline p-nitrophenyl ester in 250 ml. of dry tetrahydrofuran is added 14.1 g. (0.140 mol.) of n-hexylamine in 50 ml. of tetrahydrofuran, and the resulting solution is left overnight at room temperature. The solvent is removed in vacuo, the residue is diluted with ether, and this solution is then washed thoroughly with 1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide, water and then dilute hydrochloric acid. On drying the ether solution and concentrating in vacuo, a pale yellow oil comprising 1-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-2-[(hexylamino)carbonyl]pyrrolidine is obtained.
