Procedure
To a stirred mixture of benzene (400 ml.) and sodium hydride (5.3 g. of a 57% suspension in nujol), which is free of nujol, is added dropwise, under dry nitrogen, 1-(3-bromopropyl)-1-ethoxycarbonyl-2-indanone (39.3 g.) in 100 ml. of benzene. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. Water is added and the organic layer is separated, washed with aqueous sodium chloride, dried, concentrated and distilled to give after a small forecut, 20.5 g. of the title product with b.p. 130°-145° at 0.5 mm.
