A solution of 5-ethoxy-1,3-dihydropyrrolo[4,3,2-de]isoquinoline (10.0 g), described in Example 5, in methanol (100 ml) is combined with a solution of hydrazine hydrate (3 g) in methanol (150 ml). After boiling overnight the mixture is concentrated to half of its original volume and diluted with ether. The resulting precipitate is collected to give the title compound, mp 188° - 189°C, νmaxnujol 3370, 3325, 3150, 1628, 1583, 1540 and 1510 cm-1.
