Procedure
(3S)-3-Methoxycabonyl-2-methyl-1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1.1 g) is dissolved in methanol (10 ml), and an aqueous 1N-sodium hydroxide solution (6 ml) is added thereto. The solution is stirred at 0° C. for one hour. The mixture is acidified with 10% HCl, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is distilled to remove ethyl acetate, whereby (3S)-2-methyl-1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (350 mg) is obtained as crystals.
