5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-2-nitrobenzoic acid (3.0 g, 0.0083 mole) is dissolved in iso-propyl alcohol (20 ml) and a solution of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide (0.644 g, 0.0083 mole) is added dropwise and the reaction mixture stirred for 1 hour before removing the solvent and water under vacuum at 0.2 mm overnight to afford 2.8 g of sodium 5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-2-nitrobenzoate.
