Procedure

1.0 Gram of 6-[1-hydroxy-3-(4-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-1-pyridyl)propyl]-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril was dissolved in 30 ml of methanol, then 2 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid was added to the solution and the mixture was refluxed by heating for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under a reduced pressure, then thus obtained residue was treated with 50 ml of 0.5% of sodium hydroxide and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was washed with water and dried, next chloroform was removed by distillation at a room temperature then the residue thus obtained was recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 0.6 g of 6-[3-(4-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-1-pyridyl)-1-propenyl]-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril in light yellow plate-like crystals. Melting point: 182°-183° C. (decomposed).
