Procedure
(RS)-3-Amino-4-phenyl-1-butene (1.2 g, 8.0 mmol) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml). To the solution, a solution of N-carbethoxyphthalimido (2.2 g, 10.0 mmol) in water (20 ml) and anhydrous sodium carbonate (1.06 g, 10.0 mmol) was added and stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove tetrahydrofuran, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate.
