To a solution of 8-chloro-7-[4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-benzyl]-1,3-dimethylxanthine (866 mg) in DMF (40 ml) was added sodium methoxide (10 ml, 28% in methanol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. This reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate, washed with saturated aqueous NaCl solution, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was then distilled off and the residue was washed with ether to provide the title compound as colorless powder (470 mg, 54%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 3.40(3H,s), 3.54(3H,s), 4.17(3H,s), 5.36(2H,s), 7.38-7.78(8H,m).
