(R)-1-Benzyl-3-hydroxypyrrolidine (3.9 g, 22 mmol) was dissolved in toluene (100 mL) and the solution stirred and cooled to 0°-5° C. Triethylamine (2.66 g, 26.2 mmol) was added followed by methanesulfonyl chloride (3.0 g, 26 mmol). A slurry formed after 30 minutes. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. Water (100 mL) was added to the reaction mixture and the organic layer separated and washed with water (100 mL) and concentrated under reduced pressure to give (R)-1-benzyl-3-mesyloxypyrrolidine (5.7 g) as a yellow oil:
