3-Chloromethyl-2-methyl-4-trifluoromethyl -pyridine from step 2 above was oxidized using the procedure as given in step 3 of Example 3. 3-Chloromethyl-2-methyl-4-trifluoromethyl-pyridine-N-oxide was obtained as a white solid (TLC Rf = 0.21 (97:3 CH2Cl2 :MeOH)).
