Procedure
A suspension of 141 mg (0.41 mmol) of 7 in 1.66 mL of MeOH and 4.15 mL of Et2O was cooled to -20° C. (CO2 /CCl4), and HCl gas was passed through the mixture via septum inlet for 5 minutes, until most of the solids had dissolved and the solution was saturated with HCl. The mixture was placed in the freezer in a desiccator for 66 hours and then concentrated in vacuo to produce a white foamy solid. The solid was broken up, washed with three portions of anhydrous Et2O, dried in vacuo to give 111 mg (66%) of 1 as an off-white solid which decomposed on heating and also decomposed after several days in a freezer.
