Procedure

A solution of 6-[(2,2-diphenylethyl)amino]-9-(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)-9H-purine-2-carbonitrile (Preparation 23) (17 g, 40.1 mmol) in ethanol (850 ml) was treated with 2 N aqueous hydrochloric acid (50 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, the residue was dissolved in ethanol and the solvent was again removed under reduced pressure. The residue was triturated with diethyl ether, filtered, washed with diethyl ether and pentane and dried to afford the title compound as a solid (13.6 g).
